Case Study: Citizen Spritz
We were really excited about this project because it pushed us to get creative with what’s possible in our studio. Here is a little insight into what happened…
The Brief
I recently came across the phrase “drinking alcohol is just borrowing happiness from tomorrow”. While sharing a drink with friends can be fun, more people are starting to question whether it’s worth the impending doom of a hangover.
At the forefront of the movement is Citizens Spirits, who empower people’s choices by providing a drink that supplies the same kick and vibrance as a cocktail, but without the downsides of alcohol.
Citizen Spirits has become well-known for their elegant bottles of Aperitif, to be served at home in a tall glass, with soda, ice and a slice. However, the client reached out to us as they needed a set of eye-catching images to advertise the release of their pre-made canned mock-tails.
The brief focused on the can being a spontaneous purchase whilst out with friends. We wanted the feel of having a drink, socialising and treating yourself, but also the bright freshness that comes with escaping a hangover. Meanwhile, we needed to maintain the minimalist, bright, abstract style which Citizen Spritz had already developed their brand with.
The Shoot:
After throwing around ideas and possibilities, we decided on a series of high energy shots consisting of colourful backdrops, big splashes, fizz and fruit. We even built a water tank specifically for the shoot, because we wanted the vision to be just right!
We love these types of projects, because while many components of a shoot have to be meticulously refined and perfected, explosive liquid-based shoots are inherently uncontrollable. It takes a lot of tries, and is very messy…and very fun.
What really brought this shoot together was the editing process. For example, the shot below was a composition of three different images, all with interesting aspects which we wanted to pull. Alan worked his magical powers on photoshop, compiling the images, removing scaffolding and imperfections… and the picture becomes the ‘perfect shot’.
The client was also really pleased with the final product:
“What you have shared today really hits the brief, some of the shots just have so much more energy and personality versus our current bank of images, really well done and you have a very happy client”.
Below are a few extra images from the shoot. We particularly like the ferocity of the bitter orange hero shot, as well as the ripples and bubbles of the pink grapefruit can as it plopped into the water.
If you want to see more, you’ll have to look out for them either on our instagram or on Citizen Spritz’s website!
